Today was amazing, Simon and I had a visit by a women called Angela who makes simple but healthy food dishes. Me and Simon had the delight of taking pictures of these dishes and make them look their best in the most possible way. At first Angela made a dish with chicken, green beans, cherry tomatoes, garlic and a type of pesto and olive oil. At first the lighting was too bright where the olive oil, tomatoes and the pesto was, leaving the main feature (the chicken) to be not as bright as it could of been, so we used a white piece of cardboard to block the light going onto the work surface and used a mirror to reflect the light onto the chicken. After we did this, the glazed chicken looked outstanding. The two other dishes were salad and salmon and they looked delicious too! After we took the photos for Angela me and Simon went on photoshop to bring the photos to life! Cant wait for tomorrow as we are filming an introduction video.
This week Liam is working with me on work experience, so I have given him the responsibility of providing a daily blog. So over to Liam!!
Woah what an amazing day.
First day of work experience went really well, I learned some new techniques on photoshop, the correct and most suitable lighting for the picture and more information about the different range of cameras and which ones are best for each job. At first I didn’t know that a sensor could make a camera take a picture, I just thought it was on a timer or a button you press, or I didn’t know how many different lenses there are. I can’t wait to go back tomorrow to learn new things and help Simon on a food photo shoot. The pictures below are what I have edited and took. Personally I think the picture with the ice water splash is the best one. To be honest it was something called a ‘happy accident’ which means I didn’t really mean to do it, originally I was supposed to drop an ice cube into the glass creating a splash and when the sensor heard it splashing it would take the picture. Well.... that didn’t happen for me, the ice cube jumped back out! But, with the power of photoshop I managed to rebuild and structure this amazing image.
I came across this YouTube video today showing how two of the services we offer have been utilised to help educate the next generation of pilots.
Matterport scanning and 360 video are just some of the tools we use to help show your business, products or services to prospective clients. If you would like to know more why not get in touch.
One of the questions I get asked most often is ‘what are the benefits of having a professional photographer for events, trade shows, exhibitions?’ and so on. Well the proof is in the pudding as they say…you have high quality photographs that demonstrate the benefits of your product and highlight the professionalism of your event. Having photographs that stand out against your competitors is a reflection of your business, services and products.
As we know children are completely unpredictable!
They can be so adorable and easy going and laughing uncontrollably one minute, and the next minute, turn that charm off completely. They will typically smile for you all day long until you put them in front of a camera, then they freeze up like a deer in headlights. So we want to avoid the gritted teeth and bug-eyed forced smiles during our session.
Winter is one of the best seasons in terms of taking photos, although the days are shorter the light is more dramatic and beautiful. It’s time to make a statement don’t let the weather deter you. Follow our simple tips to help you make the most of your photo opportunities…
Keep tracking the weather. Look at the weather forecast and consider light and shadow at your chosen location. You may not get snowfall but you can still capture the season perfectly which will result in some seriously gorgeous photographs.
Smartphones have brought creative photography to people that previously had no access to digital photo enhancement software. When applied correctly and sparingly filters can drastically enhance your photos. However, remember that sometimes “less is more” and in an effort to enhance a photo you can ruin it!
There are many apps on the market that now have the ability to apply a “filter” at the time of taking the photo, the choice is endless, from a simple black and white filter through to butterflies around your head or a Gandalf hat and beard! It can be difficult to know where to start…
This is the first in a series of post which focuses on the regular questions that I get asked as a professional photographer. This one is about how to avoid closed eyes and funny faces.
'My Mrs always has a go at me as I always pull an odd face on selfies! It's like I blink and there's loads of pictures of me with my eyes shut or half shut! How could you avoid or reduce this?'
A couple of potential causes for this, firstly blinking is a natural thing, so it could just be unfortunate timing. More likely causes are a reaction to the flash firing or could just be an involuntary reflex when you push the shutter button.
Virtual reality tours for properties are an ideal way to show off your home, hotel, conference facilities or venue. It allows potential customers to view your facilities with a fully submersive virtual reality tour.
3D is the most engaging way to view a real environment online. It can fully capturie the specialist features that you have to offer. It gives the viewer an opportunity to interact in a way that photographs don’t. Your potential customer will feel that they are really there with you already.
If you don’t keep up with the developments in technology, you will find it can have a negative impact on your business. 360 degree media will continue to develop and allows you to show the best features of your facility.
The difference between the technology we use, compared to conventional 360 panoramas, is that it not only takes the photographs, it optically measures the 3D space in real time, aligning the various scans to ensure a seamless transition. While we can't show you the live image here on our blog, we are more than happy to send you some samples, just give us a call or drop us an email, our details are below.
It is important to try emerging platforms to market your organisation as this will give you the lead over your competitors. Virtual reality tours mean that you don’t need to describe the benefits – you can show what they are – giving the potential customer a greater awareness of your facility.
Virtual reality can also be applied to planning, construction and development. It can help with the decision making process and allow the plans to become more accessible and visual even for a novice. This can help to secure funding and achieve planning permissions.

If you’re on the fence about whether to hire someone to photograph your event, consider these reasons:
Let’s say the event is a family reunion and you want to get a group photo of the whole family. You could do it yourself, but things can easily go wrong, you can cut people out or chop of the tops of heads. You can ask someone to take the photo - but you are not in control of the results, and can you keep asking if you are not happy with the photos taken? Selfies are great fun for a night out or a spontaneous moment but results are not a guarantee.
Of course you can set a timer on your camera. This can be problematic because there are so many people in the photo that you will need to take several images to make sure everyone is looking and has their eyes open. Believe me this is not as easy as you think!! Whilst the results may be hilarious they won’t be the family portrait you’d hoped for. You will have to take two to three times as long to get the photos done because you’ll have to keep resetting the timer, and you still might not have gotten the shot. Hiring a professional will eliminate all of this stress.
I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to go around all night taking selfies with my phone or camera with all of my friends and family members. More often than not I will forget to take photos as I would much prefer to relax and enjoy the moment instead of trying to capture it.
If the event is a birthday party, you don’t want to miss out on catching up with guests or helping your child open presents because you are too busy trying to take the photos. You want to be part of the action, not stuck behind the camera. These moments are too precious to miss.
Using a professional photographer ensures the quality of the photos; making the most of the light and environment. You don’t have to worry about editing and distributing the photos after the event is over. You just have to wait to receive them from your photographer.
Finally, it’s really a gift to have well lit photographs taken by a professional who preserve the memory of your event. Those images are going to be cherished by everyone for a very long time to come.
Something a little different for us this week. Rather than taking photographs are people and products in our studio, we were working outside, taking images of a housing development. Fortunately the weather was fantastic and the sun shone for the whole day, making the process a pleasant and enjoyable affair for everyone involved.
On Friday 22 June I had the privilege to shoot some environmental portraits and architectural images for Zenith House Developments. This took place at their St John’s Gardens development in Sandbach Heath, Cheshire.
The photos were commissioned to support a press release which has been issued following Zenith House Developments winning a prestigious award from the NHBC. The images and press release will be featured in the Sandbach Chronicle and other press. Here we have a couple of samples of images taken on the day.
We have limited availability for several commercial shoots over the summer months, if you would like to see how your business can benefit from professional quality photographs, get in touch on 07525 828 656 or email me at email@example.com.
Product photography is one of our specialities here at Simon Raeburn Photography. Great product photography is becoming more and more important in today’s digital world, what with the rise of internet shopping you could find yourself left behind. You’ve invested heavily in getting your website ready to sell your products, but if your images don’t stack up, you’re going to struggle. Below is an example of how if you sell products that come in a range of colours, we can ensure you have identical images of your products, just the colours on offer are different. So if you would like to know more about how we can ensure your products are shown at their very best, please get in touch.
Does anyone have a good passport photo?
I’m not sure any of us are happy with ours, are we?
Recently Teresa asked if I took passport photos as she needed to renew her passport. Her attempts to use the high street photography booths had not produced good results and she felt horrified with the photographs produced! Let’s face it, our passports last for 10 years and none of us want to be looking at a bad photograph for that long!!!!
Many of us give up after several attempts as it just seems too much hassle and expensive. The rules and regulations around passport photos are strict and if you submit a photo that doesn’t meet the requirements it won’t be accepted and will delay your application. The image needs to be a certain size, your head and eyes need to be in a particular position and you can’t smile! So, what is the solution?
You can use a professional photographer, one who understands all the requirements and can use all the tools in the box to produce a flattering photo. You won’t end up looking like the walking dead!
Our passport shoots start from as little as £25, and include 8 final print images, which you can use for your passport or driving license.
So, what are you waiting for?!
Water and electricity tend not to mix too well, which is what makes photos like this a challenge! Great Photography is a blend of science, psychology and art. It takes a skilled photographer to master all these elements and translate them into stunning images whether it be a fabulous portrait, an amazing product shot, or something like this which challenges on a number of levels. Needless to say - don’t try this at home!
Continuing with the products theme this week, I’ve been working on a number of smaller projects in relation to kitchen utensils. A few samples of those are posted below. The majority of product purchases aren’t just based on how functional your product is, it’s also about how it looks and feels. Portraying that in your advertising is essential if you are to attract the right customers to your products. If you have a great product and would like to discuss how I can help give it the best look for your advertising, feel free to get in touch at firstname.lastname@example.org
This week I’ve been working on a number of ideas on product photography for a potential client.
